10 Questions with … Matt Chellini

10 Questions with one of our local Shenandoah Valley musicians!!

Q: Please state your name and vocation for the record.

A: “Matt Chellini – Singer-songwriter.”

Q: How long have you been playing?

A: “I started playing guitar sometime in high school. So I would say a little over twenty years.”

Q: What was the title of the first song you ever wrote?

A: “The first song I remember was an instrumental song called Evolution. After a few years of playing around with it I added lyrics from a poem I had written. It’s still one of my favorite songs that I’ve written.”

Q: Who would you consider to be your #1 musical influence?

A: “I’ve had so many different influences of the years as my style has evolved. But I would say the one band that has stuck with me through it all is the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I had the tablature book for one of their albums, I never learned an entire song but I definitely picked up a lot from John Frusciante’s playing style. I taught myself to sing listening to Blood Sugar Sex Magic. I remembering wearing out the cassette tape.

Q: If you only had one musical hero you could share the stage with … who would it be?

A: “That’s a tough question. I think Neil Young would be a good choice.

Q: What would be your dream guitar?

A: “I really love my Taylor GS Mini. Taylor makes one in Koa with a better pickup then what I have now.

Q: So far, what has been your favorite musical experience?

A: “Playing the 9 songwriters series at the Bright Box. It was a lot of fun sharing the stage with so many other excellent songwriters.

Q: So far, what has been your most horrible musical experience?

A: “It was one of my first gigs. I played at the Rappahannock County music festival. The bass player in my band never showed up.

Q: How many bass players does it take to change a light bulb?

A: “I can’t think of a witty retort for this one.” (The correct answer is; Six. One to change it, five to fight off the lead guitarist hogging the spotlight)

Q: What is the next big thing you are hoping to accomplish as a musician?

A: ” I want to record a full length album and have it pressed to vinyl.”
